If you have been told your sewer line is cracked, leaking, or full of roots, the first picture that comes to mind is usually a trench running across your yard. For decades that was the only option. UV-cured pipe lining changes that. Instead of digging out the old pipe, a new pipe is formed inside it, cured with ultraviolet light, and put back into service, often the same day.
Double J Liner Repair uses the LightRay UV cured pipe lining system on sewer and drain lines across San Antonio. This guide explains what the process is, what it is good for, and where its limits are, so you can make an informed decision about your home.
UV-cured lining is a form of cured-in-place pipe, often shortened to CIPP. A flexible liner saturated with a light-curable resin is pulled or inverted into the damaged pipe through an existing access point such as a cleanout. Once the liner is in position, it is inflated so it presses tightly against the walls of the old pipe.
Then an LED UV light train travels slowly through the liner. The light triggers the resin to harden, turning the soft liner into a rigid, seamless pipe inside the original one. Because the cure only happens when the light hits it, the crew controls exactly when and how the liner sets.
Every project follows the same basic order. Skipping any of these steps is how lining jobs go wrong, which is why we do not cut corners on preparation.
Older lining methods rely on resin that cures on its own over several hours, or on hot water or steam. Those methods work, but the cure depends on temperature, moisture, and timing. If conditions in the pipe are off, the result can be inconsistent.
UV curing is on demand. The liner stays workable until the crew is satisfied with its position, then it cures quickly and evenly as the light passes through. That control is a big reason the LightRay system can deliver a strong, consistent result in hours rather than days.
Lining is a great fit for pipes that are cracked, leaking at the joints, invaded by roots, or corroded on the inside but still holding their basic shape. That describes a large share of the clay, cast iron, and older PVC lines under San Antonio homes and businesses.
The new liner is jointless, so roots have nowhere to get in, and it is resistant to chemicals and corrosion. Double J backs its sewer lining with a 10-year warranty, and the liner itself is designed to last 50 years or more.
No repair method fits every pipe. A line that has fully collapsed, or one with a severe sag where water pools, may need a different approach because the liner follows the shape of the host pipe. The camera inspection tells us which situation you are in before you spend a dollar on the repair itself.
If lining is not the right call for your line, we will tell you that plainly and explain your options.
Most residential sewer lining projects are completed in a single day. The UV cure itself is fast; most of the time goes into inspection and cleaning the line properly.
Usually not. You will need to avoid running water to the drains being lined while the crew works, but most families stay home during the job.
