Your main sewer line is out of sight, so it is easy to forget about until something goes badly wrong. The good news is that most sewer lines do not fail without warning. They send signals for weeks or months before a backup.
Here are the most common warning signs we see in San Antonio homes, and what each one may be telling you.
One slow sink is usually a local clog. When the tub, the shower, and the sinks are all slow at the same time, the problem is often further down the line where all of those drains come together: the main sewer.
Gurgling happens when air gets trapped and forced back up through the plumbing. If you hear a toilet bubble when the washing machine drains, or the tub gurgles when you flush, something downstream is restricting flow.
A healthy, sealed sewer system should not smell. A persistent sewage odor near floor drains, in the yard, or around the cleanout can mean a cracked pipe or a failed joint is letting sewer gas escape.
When the main line is blocked, wastewater looks for the lowest exit, often a ground-floor shower or tub. Water coming up in a drain when you run a fixture somewhere else is a strong sign of a main line problem.
A strip of grass that is greener than the rest, or a spot that stays damp even during a dry San Antonio summer, can be a leaking sewer line feeding the soil from below.
If you are having the main line snaked every few months, the clog is probably not the real problem. Roots growing through cracked joints or a pipe that has started to deform will keep catching debris no matter how often it is cleared.
Rodents and insects can travel through cracks in sewer pipes. An unexplained increase in roaches or rodents near the house is sometimes linked to a broken line.
A long-running leak can wash out soil under a slab, walkway, or driveway. New cracking or settling along the path of the sewer line deserves a look.
Do not guess. A camera inspection shows exactly what is happening inside the pipe, where it is, and how bad it is. Catching damage while the pipe still holds its shape usually means it can be repaired with UV-cured lining, without digging up your yard. Yes, especially when several drains are slow at the same time or the problem keeps returning after cleaning. That pattern points to the main line rather than a single fixture.
Sewer gas can contain unpleasant and potentially harmful gases. A persistent odor should be investigated promptly rather than masked.
A camera inspection will show whether the pipe still holds its shape. If it does, UV-cured lining is usually an option.
