Trenchless sewer repair is not one single method. The two most common approaches are pipe lining, also called cured-in-place pipe, and pipe bursting. Both avoid digging a full-length trench, but they work very differently and suit different situations.
Here is a straightforward comparison.
Pipe lining installs a resin-saturated liner inside the existing pipe and cures it into a new, seamless pipe. With the LightRay system, the liner is cured with UV light. The old pipe stays in the ground and acts as the host for the new one.
Lining usually needs only one access point, such as a cleanout, and leaves the yard untouched.
Pipe bursting pulls a cone-shaped bursting head through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while pulling a new pipe in behind it. It typically requires an access pit at each end of the run.
Because it replaces the pipe rather than lining it, bursting can be used where the old pipe is too damaged to serve as a host.
For most cracked, root-damaged, or corroded lines that still hold their shape, lining is the less invasive choice and is what Double J specializes in. For a pipe that has collapsed or deformed too much to line, a replacement method may be needed for that section.
The camera inspection decides it. We will show you the footage and explain why we are recommending what we recommend.
Both produce long-lasting results when properly installed. UV-cured liners are designed to last 50 years or more.
Usually not. Most lining jobs work through an existing cleanout.
A collapsed section cannot be lined because the liner needs a host pipe. That section may need a spot repair or replacement.
